12 Tips On How To Take Great Pictures

Taking great pictures has a lot to do with the knowledge you possess about your camera and photography in general. Some people can take great pictures with a cheap digital camera, while other people may end up taking horrible pictures with a top of the line DSLR camera.

The difference between poor picture quality and great picture quality can be learned with just a few important tips.

1. Always hold the camera level with your subject. This can be accomplished by aligning the camera with the natural horizontal lines. For example, if your taking photos outside then look through the viewfinder and align your camera with the horizon.

2. To achieve a more complimentary effect when shooting pictures of people, aim your camera slightly angled down on the subjects face.

3. Try to avoid placing the subject of your picture in the center of the frame. Most people naturally do this and it's a habit that's hard to break. Move, or zoom in closer and put the subject just slightly off center.

4. Think about what you're trying to capture in the picture. If you're trying to capture someone's expression then don't worry about other items around them. Focus on the face.

5. If there is adequate lighting then make sure you turn off the flash, since camera flashes make people look pale.

6. Take advantage of the ambient light available if shooting outdoors. If it's a bright, sunny day then photograph your subject under a tree. Sun light filtering though the tree branches and leaves throws soft light on your subject and great pictures are the result. The same thing can be achieved indoors by placing your subject near a window.

7. Make sure there isn't a lot of clutter in your background and change your position if necessary. Excess background clutter can ruin an otherwise great photo.

8. If your pictures just are warm or rich enough then adjust your white balance from auto to cloudy. This one small change can open up new possibilities for close-up pictures and add new perspective to ordinary objects.

9. If you're shooting landscapes then invest in a polarizing filter to reduce glare and provide richer more saturated color.

10. Stability is your friend and enemy. Use a tripod or pole to balance your camera on. This will reduce blur, especially if photographing high speed subjects such as your child's soccer game.

11. If you're taking pictures of moving water like in a stream or waterfall, use a tripod and slow down your shutter speed to capture the full effects of the water.

12. Make sure you purchase large memory cards for your camera. It's not uncommon to take twenty or more shots of the same subject just to get one great picture.

These twelve tips will help you become a better photographer. You'll start taking higher quality pictures even if you're just snapping pictures of friends and family and not attempting to be a professional photographer.
