It's often been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Which is why it's so important to give your picture a frame that helps it to speak even louder. A picture or photo frame is primarily meant to protect and highlight its contents. But the secondary function is to enhance your picture. You can take a beautiful work of art and reduce it to drabness by framing it with the wrong materials, but you can also turn an average picture into something special with the right frame.
Choosing the right frame is also a tricky job, and if you're serious about making the right choice, you need to devote some time to the search. The good news is that standard size photo frames are not expensive, and they're available in a wide range of shops. So it's easy to view a whole range of possibilities in a short space of time. Try and find a frame that appeals to you, as chances are that in some way that frame expresses something of your personality. That will help to give your framed picture a very personal touch.
Photo frames are generally made of pewter, ceramics, stainless, composites and crystal. Choose the best available design and material that you can afford. Think about your home's decor, and look for frames that will match. If you have a contemporary home, select dark frames in materials such as copper, gold or silver, or in dark colors such as black. If you'd like a Mediterranean feel, choose a white or pale blue frame. For a home filled with antiques, then ornate gilded frames are the best choice. And if you plan to put your photo in a child's room, then check out the plastic frames in interesting shapes and vivid colors.
Framing pictures is a little more difficult, as pictures don't always come in standard sizes. You may find you need to visit a professional framer to have something custom made. Frames come in a wide variety of colors, shapes and materials, so the options available can be quite overwhelming. Spend some time thinking about the effect you want to achieve. What sort of room will you be hanging the picture in? Do you want the frame to be the talking point, or the picture? Picture frames can have wide borders, and be bright and bold in color - not the best choice if the frame then overwhelms the picture it's supposed to be highlighting.
Choosing frames for your photos and pictures doesn't need to be a daunting task, as long as you spend some time making sure you know what you want, and checking out the options you have available. Remember, you will probably be looking at the frame you choose for a lot of years, so make sure you can live with it for that long!
